What is an individual tax filing number (ITIN):

The personal tax filing number is the number used by the IRS to identify taxpayers. It has a total of 9 digits, starting with 9 and the fourth digit is 7 or 8, for example, 9XX-7X-XXXX. The personal tax return number is issued to those who cannot receive the social security number. Immigration status is not taken into consideration when the personal tax return number is issued. The personal tax return number is issued to residents (RESIDENT) or non-resident foreigners (NON RESIDENT) who need to pay taxes in accordance with the tax law.

Purpose of personal tax filing number:

  1. File federal taxes

  2. Open a bank account

  3. Apply for a credit card

  4. Make a phone call (T-Mobile, AT &T, Verizon, Metro PC, and So on)

 

Note: Having a personal tax filing number does not prove that you can legally work in the United States, nor does it enjoy the US social security payments and low-income tax credits.

Who needs a personal tax filing number:

Non-resident aliens do not have a social security number, but they need to file tax returns, including tax returns for American income and tax refunds. RESIDENT ALIEN (live in the United States for more than 183 days) but no social security number, no work permit but related income. such as:

  • Dependents of U.S. citizens or residents who have not obtained a Social Security Number.

  • The spouse of a U.S. citizen or resident who has not obtained a Social Security number.

  • Non-resident foreign students, teachers and researchers who have not obtained a Social Security number.

  • Spouses and children of non-resident foreigners who have not obtained a social security number (such as B1 visa, B2 visa).

 

How to apply for a personal tax filing number and what information is needed:

I. In order to prove that the purpose of applying for a tax number is to file a tax return, the person applying for a tax number must attach a federal tax form when applying for a tax number. The application form is W-7 and the tax form is 1040NR or 1040.

 

II. In order to prove the identity of the applicant, the applicant must submit two or more copies of the following documents (notarization required). Note: If you have a passport, you only need to submit a notarized copy of the passport.

  1. ID card issued by other countries (must show photo, name, address, birthday, effective date)

  2. U.S. Driver's License

  3. Local birth paper

  4. Foreign driver's license

  5. U.S. state ID card

  6. Foreign Voter Registration Card

  7. U.S. military ID card

  8. Photo ID issued by the U.S. Immigration Service

  9. School ID (student or dependent-under 18 years old)

  10. Medical records (Dependent-under 14 years of age)
